Schedule: Part-Time (3–5 hours/day, weekdays; additional hours as needed)
Program Dates: May 26-29 (staff orientation & training week), June 1–26 and July 6–24, 2026
Compensation: $25 per hour (fixed rate)

About Central Alabama Marines-Council

Central Alabama Marines-Council is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to youth development, leadership training, academic enrichment, and strengthening community partnerships across Central Alabama. The organization has no members and its Board of Directors and Officers serve without compensation. The charity is not affiliated with the United States Marine Corps or any other government entity.

About Project Pathfinder

Project Pathfinder is a community initiative delivering leadership development and academic enrichment programming to military- and veteran-connected students across Central Alabama.

The summer program integrates:

  • STEM enrichment and hands-on learning

Position Summary

The Academic Instructor reports to the Camp Director and is responsible for delivering high-quality, engaging instruction in reading, math, and/or STEM for students in grades 1–8.

This role focuses on instruction, student engagement, and academic support in a structured environment with provided curriculum and materials. Instructors work closely with camp leadership and staff to ensure a positive, safe, and effective learning experience.

Key Responsibilities

Instruction & Student Engagement

  • Teach reading, math, and/or STEM enrichment to students in grades 1–8
  • Deliver instruction using provided curriculum and pacing guides
  • Facilitate hands-on STEM activities that promote problem-solving and critical thinking
  • Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs
  • Maintain an engaging, structured, and supportive classroom environment

Academic Support & Assessment

  • Support student skill development and reinforcement
  • Assist with academic assessments (e.g., reading and math diagnostics)
  • Monitor and communicate student progress

Classroom Management & Environment

  • Apply effective classroom management strategies
  • Promote a respectful, inclusive, and positive learning environment
  • Maintain organization, cleanliness, and safety of instructional spaces

Camper Safety & Supervision

  • Maintain active supervision and accountability of students at all times
  • Support safe transitions between activities
  • Monitor student well-being, including hydration and outdoor safety
  • Follow all safety procedures and guidelines

Collaboration & Communication

  • Collaborate with camp leadership and instructional team
  • Participate in staff meetings, briefings, and trainings
  • Communicate professionally with staff and program leadership

Qualifications

Required

  • Alabama Teaching Certification (active or recently held) strongly preferred, especially in elementary education, middle school education, or related fields.
  • Experience teaching reading, math, and/or STEM in K–8 settings
  • Strong classroom management and student engagement skills
  • Ability to differentiate instruction for diverse learners
  • Ability to work in a structured, team-based environment
  • Successful completion of background screening

Preferred

  • Experience with STEM instruction, project-based learning, or enrichment programs
  • Familiarity with academic assessment tools (e.g., Renaissance STAR)
  • CPR / First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain prior to start)

Schedule & Availability

  • Limited planning hours in May 2026
  • Required availability during:
    • June 1–26, 2026 (8am - 2pm)

    • July 6–24, 2026 (8am - 2pm)

Daily commitment: 3–6 hours (weekdays only)
Additional hours may be required for training or program support.

Compensation & Classification

This is a seasonal, non-exempt W-2 position paid hourly. Overtime eligibility applies in accordance with applicable labor laws.

Due to the temporary and seasonal nature of this role, this position is not eligible for employer-sponsored benefits, including medical, dental, vision, retirement plans, or paid leave, unless otherwise required by applicable law.
